The Adult Social Justice Committee at First Unitarian Universalist Society
has spearheaded a variety of services over the years. While still in the
midst of reorganizing and restructuring committee work, these are our
on-going commitments:
We provide support to Eastern Farm Workers Association (EFWA) in their
various programs which help seasonal workers and the working poor in various
Syracuse neighborhoods and surrounding counties including on-going clothing,
back to school drive and household supplies. Several members of First UU
help individually as well.
We collect good used clothing, dress shoes and accessories for women that
are used for the Dress for Success Program. This clothing is delivered to
Elmwood Presbyterian on South Avenue.
Each year we donate useful, unsold items from our garage sale to a local
organization s that directly benefit the Syracuse and Onondaga County
communities.
Our food bin is always hungry. Items collected include not only food but
also personal hygiene products, disposable diapers, etc. Food stamps do
not allow purchase of the latter items. A friend of the church provides
bathroom sized toilet paper on a regular basis which he rerolls from larger
rolls that would have been thrown out. Over 2,000 rolls have been
gratefully received and his ingenuity praised. Contents of the bin are
regularly delivered to St. Lucy's Roman Catholic Church for their food
pantry. We also do occasional deliveries to Hopps Memorial CME church on
State and Burt Streets and provide food to EFWA for their emergency food
pantry.
Members of the committee help with programs where our children can be
involved and feel that they make a real difference in the Louder than Words
program. For example, this year a "baby shower" was organized for St.
Lucy's food pantry for baby essentials, many of which cannot be purchased
with Food Stamps. Last year our families collected many boxes of warm items
and school supplies for Afghanistan which were delivered by a church
member's son on duty there.
