Youth Religious Education (YRE): 2010 - 2011

kids

Religious Education for Youth at First UU is a dynamic, growing program. We offer a variety of classes and experiences for youth ages 5-18. The program has a Director of Religious Education, who, along with the YRE Committee, chooses appropriate curricula, and tailors the materials to the needs of our congregation's children.

Our Theme this year is Where Did UU Come From

At First Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse, we celebrate our children's curiosity. We provide an environment that nurtures their ability to explore questions as well as finding answers to them.

This year we will be offering curricula to celebrate and discover more about one of the sources of our Seven Principles:

Christian and Jewish teachings which tell us to love all others as we love ourselves.

In addition to this theme, the YRE Program is actively involved in Louder Than Words activities (social action), Special Programs (such as Guest at Your Table) with a few Community Sundays thrown in to allow the children and youth to spend time getting to know each other in less formal ways.

Nursery/Pre-school: Our nursery is open from 10:15 until 12:00 to allow parents time to get settled before the service and enjoy some conversation in the fellowship hall after the service.

Grades K-8:Our Youth Religious Education (YRE) program takes place during the service. Children attend the first part of the service with their parents during which time there is a Focus on Youth story for all ages. After this time they are dismissed for religious education until 12:00 while parents stay for the sermon and then enjoy some time to reflect with others during social hour.

If you have questions about the program or the curriculum, please email the Director of Religious Education at firstuusyrdre@yahoo.com.

Youth Group

Welcome all Teens in grades 9 - 12!
We are the Youth Group at First UU Society! We meet every Sunday in the Teen Room from 10:00 - 12:00:
10:00 - 10:30 open conversation
10:30 - 11:30 focused conversation/work time
11:30 - 12:00 free time or continue work from earlier

Based on the UUA youth empowerment model of YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists), we are largely self-directed but are supported by a loving team of volunteer advisors. We discuss issues that are of concern to Unitarian Universalist Youth, such as UU Identity, Social Justice Issues, and Service Projects. Of course, that is not all we do!

We use our meeting times to plan social events like movies, dinners, or sleepovers. We also discuss fundraising options and how we as a group want to use those funds. We use fundraising money for Con registration fees. (A "Con" is youth group talk for "Youth Conference.") Everyone wants to know about Cons, so here's the scoop. In the past, we have sent kids to almost every Con in the area. Cons last from Friday Night to Sunday Morning. It is a wonderful way to find, meet, and connect with other UU teens. There is truly something for everyone at Cons. Whether you like chilling out and watching movies, wandering into deep conversations, or playing games, you will find it at a Con.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact the Youth Advisors: Bonnie at squeakybones1@gmail.com, Jeff at redlami@yahoo.com. We look forward to making room in the group for you!
