The Committee on Ministry supports the ministry of the congregation in personal and denominational concerns, issues and ideas.
COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION: Committee on Ministry
COUNCIL: Religious Affairs
CHARGE: To assist the Minister and serve the entire congregation in improving and strengthening relations and in carrying on an effective ministry as guided by the congregational recovenant. To serve as a communication channel between the Minister and or Ministry of the church and the congregation. It seeks to understand, assess, support, and advocate for robust ministry throughout the context of congregational life.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Be available for consultation/counsel with the Minister on matters concerning the ministerial/congregational relationship.
2. Be available for consultation with the congregation on matters concerning the ministry of the church.
3. Advise the Minister of conditions within the congregation that may affect relations between the Minister and members.
4. Help to identify ministerial needs and opportunities for nurture within the congregation.
5. Interpret to the congregation the nature and scope of the work of the Minister, including a clarification of role expectations for Minister and members.
6. Help facilitate a process of annual evaluation of the Minister in conjunction with the Compensation & Benefits Committee.
7. Assist the Minister on plans for professional development through continuing education and advocate such plans to the Board of Trustees and the congregation.
8. Support and contribute to the work of a ministerial search committee when the Minister leaves.
MEMBERS: 3-5 members. Members should be well acquainted with the Minister and the congregation.
TERMS OF OFFICE: The first appointments shall be made for terms of two to four years, so that one new appointment shall be made every two years. The President and/or Vice President shall make all appointments after consultation with the Minister. Current members will step down from the committee at the end of a settled ministry; however, re-appointment to a new Committee on Ministry is possible. Terms should be staggered to avoid an all-new committee in any one year.
MEETING SCHEDULE: At least quarterly. A regular agenda should be developed with specific topics for discussion at each meeting. The emphasis should be on regularly scheduled meetings to review the Ministry of the church, rather than on crisis-oriented meetings. The committee may meet without the Minister, but this should not occur without the Minister being so advised and arrangements made to share the substance of the meeting with the Minister.
