First UU's Committees

committee working together

First UU's committees are broken up into two groups - Faith Development and Stewardship. Our committees are critical in providing spiritual and sustaining growth to our community. Please consider joining one of our committees and contributing in your own way to the health and well-being of our congregation!

FAITH DEVELOPMENT GROUP

Committee on Ministry

To assist the Minister and serve the entire congregation in improving and strengthening relations and in carrying on an effective ministry as guided by the congregational recovenant. To serve as a communication channel between the Minister and or Ministry of the church and the congregation. It seeks to understand, assess, support, and advocate for robust ministry throughout the context of congregational life.

Worship and Music

The Worship Services Committee is responsible for arranging or coordinating services on the Sundays when the minister is not in the pulpit. This happens approximately once per month. We also provide logisitical support such as flowers and ushers and greeters on a weekly basis. The music committee provides leadership on all matters relating to music and musical presentations in the church.

Youth Religious Education

The YRE Committee is made up of a group of parents, interested adults and teens who share the common goal of providing a vital, stimulating program for our children. Each year appropriate curricula and materials are tailored to the needs of our congregation's children.

Hospitality

We have a great group of fun people who help support our fellowship hour after services. Please come join us and get to know the members of our congregation!

Caring

The function of the Caring Team is to foster a CARING COMMUNITY AT First UU. To that end the team facilitates the congregation in providing caring connections to the members and friends of the church community, in close coordination with the minister.

Social Justice

We have an active social justice and community outreach group.

STEWARDSHIP GROUP

Finance and Contracts

The Finance Committee advises the Board of Trustees concerning matters requiring financial and business expertise, such as the annual budget, banking and investment. Finance oversees activities of the Financial Secretary, Bookkeeper, Montessori communication and fundraising.

Trust

To manage and grow the endowment funds of First UU.

Canvass

To contact members and friends of the congregation to obtain a financial commitment in support of the mission of the church.

Membership

The Membership Committee helps to welcome and integrate newcomers into the life of our Society. Honoring both the UU Principle of the "inherent worth and dignity of each person" and our commitment as a "welcoming congregation" to the GLBT community, we welcome all to join us in the Good News of Unitarian Universalism. The committee is also responsible for helping to instruct newcomers in the Unitarian Universalist faith and inviting them to membership in our society.

Building and Grounds

The Building and Grounds Committee plans and coordinates a maintenance program for the church and provides a safe, attractive and efficient facility for members and other users. Building and Grounds sponsors Fall and Spring Clean-up Parties, oversees the cleaning service.

Nominating and Long-term Stewardship

Nominating

The Nominating Committee prepares a slate of candidates for officers, members of the Board of Trustees, and members of the Nominating Committee as specified in Articles VI, VIII, and X of the Constitution of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse.

Long-range Planning

The Long-range Planning Committee monitors progress on existing long range plans, facilitates the development of new long range projects when necessary, and brainstorms solutions to congregational needs based on input from the board, committees and the membership.
